Frodo grew into the largest chimp in the history of the Gombe chimpanzee project. Using his size, impressive displays and violent attacks, Frodo became alpha male in 1997, when many of the other males, including his higher-ranking older brother (Freud), suffered from an outbreak of sarcoptic mange.
